Retractable Orange Antennae

I had no idea! Spicebush Swallowtail caterpillars have antennae!

I must have startled this one.  As I approached, I noticed the bright little antlers.  I have observed these creatures over the past couple of years.  I had even brought a few caterpillars into my home to witness their transformation from caterpillars to butterflies.  But, the antennae were new to me.

I was equally astonished when the antennae retracted!

I did a little research.  The antennae are a defensive mechanism.  They can exude a pungent odor.  I feel badly that the caterpillar felt threatened by my presence, but I am glad to learn more about these fascinating creatures.

My Spicebush plants have lots of caterpillars this year. Today, I could see 6 of them. As they are such great camouflage artists, there are likely a lot more.

Plant Lindera benzoin – Spicebush to support these amazingly beautiful creatures. Spicebush are native shrubs with pretty yellow flowers in the spring and red berries (on the females) in the fall. A great alternative to Forsythia!
